For many, the word yoga conjures up images of stretchy leggings, downward dogs, and perhaps a "Namaste" bumper sticker on a neighbor’s car. But yoga is far more than a physical practice—it’s a vast spiritual and philosophical tradition that touches every aspect of life, including how we sleep.
One of yoga’s most profound yet lesser-known practices is Yoga Nidra, or "yogic sleep." Unlike traditional yoga, which focuses on movement and breath, Yoga Nidra is a guided meditative practice that leads you into a state of deep relaxation while remaining consciously aware. It is the bridge between wakefulness and sleep, a sacred space where healing, insight, and spiritual connection unfold.
Why Practice Yoga Nidra?
Life moves fast. Our minds are constantly bombarded with notifications, endless to-do lists, and the stress of daily responsibilities. When we finally crawl into bed at night, instead of peaceful rest, we often replay conversations, worry about tomorrow, or find ourselves scrolling until sleep takes over.
Yoga Nidra helps us break this cycle by consciously unwinding the mind before sleep. It’s a powerful practice for:
✔️ Releasing stress and tension
✔️ Improving sleep quality
✔️ Enhancing self-awareness and intuition
✔️ Accessing deeper states of meditation
✔️ Encouraging vivid and meaningful dream states
This practice is especially helpful for those interested in lucid dreaming or dream work, as it trains the mind to remain aware even as the body rests.
Preparing for Your Yoga Nidra Practice
Creating a peaceful nighttime ritual is essential for deep relaxation and meaningful dreams. About an hour before bed, start shifting your environment and mindset with these simple steps:
1. Limit Screens & Media Influences
Turn off your phone, TV, and other digital distractions at least 60 minutes before bed.
Avoid social media, intense news, or stimulating conversations.
2. Choose a Calming Herbal Tea Instead of THC
If you’re used to using THC to relax at night, consider replacing it with a tea that naturally supports vivid dreaming and relaxation:
Mugwort – Traditionally used to enhance dreams and deepen meditative states.
Blue Lotus Blossom – A sacred flower known for its calming effects and connection to spiritual insight.
Sip your tea slowly, breathing deeply and setting an intention for your night’s rest.
3. Set an Intention for Your Practice
Yoga Nidra isn’t just about relaxation—it’s an opportunity to connect with deeper parts of yourself. Before beginning, take a moment to set an intention for your practice. This could be something simple like:
“I invite peace and clarity into my night.”
“I am open to receiving divine wisdom in my dreams.”
“Tonight, I fully rest and awaken refreshed.”
Your Yoga Nidra Practice
Once you’re settled in for the night, find a comfortable place to lie down—your bed works perfectly. Use pillows or blankets to support your body so you feel completely at ease. Then, follow along with the Yoga Nidra guided meditation (linked below).
During the practice, you’ll be guided through a journey of deep relaxation, moving awareness through your body, breath, and subtle energy centers. You may feel yourself drifting toward sleep, but part of you will remain gently awake, resting in the space between worlds.
Closing the Practice
After your session, simply allow sleep to take you naturally. There’s no need to force anything—trust that your subconscious is receiving exactly what it needs.
In the morning, take a moment before reaching for your phone to reflect on any sensations, dreams, or insights you experienced. Over time, Yoga Nidra can help you access deeper levels of awareness, both in sleep and in waking life.
