We are the force that shapes our world with every breath, every word, and every contraction of our body. The source of this power is so close, so constant, that we often overlook it. Yet, within us lies a small but mighty instrument that holds the key to nervous system regulation, alignment, and the harmony of our entire being.
Our tongue is a living bridge, a conductor of energy and intention, whispering to the body how it should hold itself, what it should believe, and what it will release. When we are disregulated—whether through the words we utter, the tension we store, or the disconnection from our breath—we tighten, pull, and distort, sending signals of strain throughout the body. But when we are freed, when we soften our tongue into its rightful place, it becomes an instrument of life itself.
Our Tongue as the Seat of Power

"Be impeccable with your word." This first agreement from Don Miguel Ruiz’s The Four Agreements speaks to the undeniable truth that our words create our reality. We are the wielder of this creative force. Whether through affirmations or curses, silence or song, we broadcast our perception of ourselves and the world, shaping not only our relationships but also our physical form.
In Christianity, the Book of Proverbs declares, "The tongue has the power of life and death." In Buddhism, right speech is essential to the Eightfold Path, guiding us toward enlightenment by ensuring our words cause no harm. In Taoism, its position is integral to Qi circulation, a gateway to inner balance and harmony. And in shamanic traditions, words are spoken with great reverence, as sound carries energy vibrations that ripple through the seen and unseen worlds.
From Our Mouth to Our Toes: The Anatomy of Expression

Anatomically, we are not just a series of isolated muscles—our tongue is a key player in a vast, interconnected system. It is tethered to the body’s deepest postural structures, extending our influence from the jaw to the throat, through the spine, and down into the pelvis and feet. The fascial networks that support posture and movement all take cues from our tongue's position. A tongue held in tension translates to a body held in tension; a tongue that rests in its natural placement allows for a body that moves with ease.
Consider the tongue-to-toe connection. Through the myofascial system, improper posture can lead to misalignment, affecting everything from the way we breathe to the way we stand. Chronic jaw clenching, restrictive speech, or an inability to fully express oneself can translate into tightened hips, locked knees, and even foot pain. The body listens to what we are holding.
Opening the Throat Chakra: Freeing the Path of Expression

The throat chakra, Vishuddha, is the energetic center of communication, truth, and self-expression. When our tongue is tense or restrained, this energy center can become blocked, leading to difficulty in speaking our truth, a tight jaw, or even discomfort in the neck and shoulders. To open this vital channel, we must consciously engage with breath, sound, and movement.
Somatic Exercises for Release and Realignment
Tongue Stretch & Throat Opening: Open the mouth wide and stick the tongue out as far as possible. Hold for 5 seconds, then relax. Repeat 5 times to release stored tension.
Jaw Release: Place the tip of the tongue against the roof of the mouth, then gently open and close the jaw while breathing deeply. This helps realign the jaw and ease tension in the throat.
Vibrational Humming Exercise: Take a deep breath in, then exhale with a deep hum, allowing the vibration to resonate through the chest and throat. Feel the energy radiate through the ribcage and down into the pelvis.
Neck & Shoulder Rolls: Loosen tension by slowly rolling the neck and shoulders in circular motions, breathing deeply as you release tightness.
Pelvic Resonance: Sit comfortably and place both hands on your lower belly. Hum deeply, feeling the vibration travel downward, softening the pelvic floor and hips.
Affirmations to Speak into Reality
My voice is strong, clear, and free.
I speak my truth with confidence and grace.
My breath flows with ease, nourishing my body and soul.
My words create harmony, healing, and alignment.
I release all tension and allow energy to flow effortlessly through me.
The Healing Frequency: Activating the Vagus Nerve

The Vagus nerve, often referred to as the wandering nerve, extends from the brainstem through the diaphragm and into the digestive organs. Its activation through vibration has been a cornerstone of shamanic healing traditions for millennia. Modern medicine is now recognizing this wisdom under the name vibrational bone therapy, acknowledging the profound effect of sound waves on our nervous system and skeletal structure.
One of the most effective ways to activate the Vagus nerve is through deep, resonant humming or mantra chanting:
The OM Mantra: Chanting "OM" (AUM) creates a full-body vibration that resonates through the bones, calming the nervous system and realigning energetic flow.
The Mmmm Sound: Simply humming with the lips closed sends healing resonance through the diaphragm, ribcage, and pelvis, unlocking stored tension.
Low Toning: Inhale deeply and exhale with a deep "Ahhh" or "Ohhh" sound, feeling the sound waves travel from the throat into the chest and belly.
We are more than a muscle—we are the key to embodiment. We reflect the deepest-held beliefs, the patterns of tension, and the capacity for ease. By reclaiming our rightful place, we do more than free the body; we awaken the power to speak life into being, to align with the highest truth, and to step into the world with grace.
May we rest easy, may our words be impeccable, and may our journey be one of liberation.
